Audulus 3 App Reviews

Amazing ..... GET IT!

I have been into synthesizers since way back in the 70s when I bought my first Moog Opus 3. To now have a tweakers dream like Audulus 3 is awesome. The fact that this even runs on an iPad just blows my mind. Its easy to drag, drop, connect and line and then play is really neat. There are plenty of tutorials to help along the way if you need some help. This music app just keeps getting better and better.

Home Run

Audulus 3 is a home run! This is one of the coolest, deepest, most thoughtfully designed apps in the App Store, in any category, and this new version just upped the game by a lot. It may not be for everyone. Its not an instant gratification kind of app. But if theres a sonic explorer in you, herein lies your ticket to build the synthesizer or effects processor of your dreams. Seems like if you can dream it, you can probably build it in Audulus. This new version makes it even easier to get started, and really makes the workflow faster. Grab your favorite beverage, prepare to do some learning and exploring, and get lost in this app. Its great fun!

Worth the time and effort

This is really a fantastic app, with infinite flexibility. Not exactly for novices, as you need to understand the basic principles of synthesis and some math and visual programming to get started, but the rewards are well worth it. A truly modular environment, you can build any synthesizer you can imagine. Work through the classic "Synth Secrets" series from Sound on Sound, and Audulus can do it. Beautiful, complex, and the developer is really dedicated and responsive. Love it!

Awesome App, Must have for programming musicians

Incredibly flexible and easy to use if you have a programming background. I was creating fairly complex modules within 20 minutes of the download. Don’t let the complex looking network diagrams drive you away, it’s a lot of pieces, but the pieces are pretty simple to understand after a little study. Most were pretty imitative to me. Yes, I have a programming, math, and music background, but everything looks and works really straight forward to me. I also love the fact that I have it both on my iPad and my Mac so I can develop patches and use them on either. The UI is very intuitive once you use it a bit; any app as complex as Audulus is going to have some unique aspects to its UI. I have no issues with making the connections in one move and after only a few hours with the app it feels fluid to use and create patches.

Don’t be shy

For anyone interested in modular synths or building your own sound controls this is excellent. I own other apps and programs. Definitely requires basic understanding of basic synth layout and this would be true of any other comparable program, otherwise buy a dedicated synth app. The iOS interface works well but definitely read through the tutorials. I have the OS X version as well and I can’t say enough about how much I love this software.

Pandoras box!

A visual, technological and musical tour-de-force. It has streamlined sound design and the tutorials and patches are a much-welcomed addition for seeing its full capabilities. A real steal at this price, and only the tip of the iceberg for its potential.

Six Stars

I messaged the developer who replied pretty much immediately to me while out at a store, saying Id get a further reply shortly. Never have I experienced that type of response or personable attention outside of maybe calling my family, lol. Upon speaking to the developer further, I am convinced that this is a person and a platform that deserves my support, as well as anyone on the fence about it. As a music and sound professional, I can say that Audulus offers infinite freedom within set parameters. Those parameters being "how synthesis works", so your musical/programming ability (as well as your imagination) really is the only limit. Unlike many other platforms however, I feel that Audulus can also act as an extraordinarily effective educational tool to anyone with the desire to understand the fundamentals of synthesis, as well as take that knowledge and push it further. As someone who spent a lot of time reading about waveforms, synthesis, etc., to gain that understanding, I can tell you definitively that no amount of reading will give you more conceptual understanding or retention then hands-on experience and doing. Audulus shines because it not only gives you the aural feedback (sound), but also the tactile and visual feedback that deepens your retention as well as providing learners who may not naturally gravitate to textbook learning, a valuable alternative to gain the understanding and hands-on experience/reinforcement that allows you to then develop your own voice/sound/ideas. And please dont take this to mean that it is not a serious studio and stage instrument. I simply emphasized the understanding aspects of it because it is rare (in my experience) to find an instrument/program/synth that is equally effective in all scenarios and for all levels of experience. Couple that with my experience with the developer on a support and personal level, and I can not recommend Audulus highly enough. Many thanks to the developer, and thank you for reading.

Amazeballs! Next level synth!

Worth every penny, I bought it for iOS and OS X and am addicted to it. I own many modular synths, eurorack, reaktor, maxmsp, pure data, Nord modular g2... and this is currently my favorite of all! This will likely stay my go to for quite some time. I love the UI, so beautiful and seamless. Beautiful, powerful, flexible, fun, smooth, portable.. What more could you ask for??! I can sketch a part of a patch with my phone while Im on the toilet, and then immediately open it up on the iPad through the cloud, then when I am working on a song in logic, I can open up the audio unit and load it up for sequencing / recording. I cant even believe how well it works on the iPhone 6s I just got, this whole fluid zooming based gui makes it possible.

Powerful with Great Support

I have tried many modular apps on iOS and Audulus 3 has been the best. You can create your own filters, sequencers, synths or other musical tools using the app and theyll work in IAA, Audiobus, and can be controlled via MIDI. There are many useful modules created by other Audulus users which you can download from their forum directly into the app. The documentation in the app, patches, online, and in videos is very helpful. The Audulus forum provides lots of support and you will receive good advice and help from both from the development team and from other users. Its great that the same Audulus patches work on both iOS and the OSX version.

Come on the adventure

As soon as the updates stopped coming on Jasuito I decided to invest in this app. I was not disappointed. This app has no parallel on the App Store. It is more powerful and customizable in every way. While Audulus has gotten (a lot) easier with the 3.0 update, modular synthesis isnt for the faint of heart. Its not for everybody. But if you enjoy learning, tinkering, and a challenge, get over here!

Great design!

I left 4 stars because I like wiggle room! This app is really fun but I think there is room for improvement. The biggest improvement I would like to see is that it currently does not play nice with Bluetooth headset output! In fact,in my experience it does not play at all! Other audio music creation apps do, so I know it can be done! Its the same on both ipad and iPhone. My ipad wired headphone output stopped working entirely for some inexplicable reason, so I can only use the speakers...(which is disappointing!). Another small thing is that I have not been able to make "restore example modules" work for some reason.....so just a suggestion ....if you want to tweak an installed patch...make a copy of the original and tweak on that.

Far more valuable than your average music app

$30 can seem steep for a music app these days, but I took a leap on a friends recommendation and Im really glad I did. Now, this and Samplr are my two favorite music apps for iPad. Im just scratching the surface of what is possible, and Ive already made some cool patches, despite very little prior experience with modular programming/thinking. The UI is super intuitive, the tutorials are great, and the possibilities are endless. Thats a cliche I know, but with Audulus its true, because you can build patches from the ground up at a component level. You can also use tons of premade modules in the app or download them from the community forum, altering them as you like. The best part about Audulus is that its fun and Im learning a ton about synthesis. If you want to treat your inner music geek to a great time, get Audulus.
